The Best Way to Travel Seoul
The Seoul Subway is hands down the most convenient way to get to your destination in Korea. Compared to anywhere else in the world, it is incredibly clean, fast, convenient, and affordable. If you want to experience real local public transport, I 100% recommend taking the subway.
Especially Line 2 (The Green Line). This loop line is crucial for tourists because it connects all the hottest spots in Seoul: Hongdae, Seongsu, and Gangnam.
However, there is a catch. Because it is so popular, it can turn into a “Hell Train” at certain times.
I analyzed the official congestion data from 2025 to show you exactly WHEN you should avoid riding it.
1. Line 2 (The Green Loop): The Heart of Seoul

2. Line 4 (The Blue Line): The Tourist Route

📊 Decoding the “Red Zone”
Do you see those deep Red Blocks on the heatmap? That isn’t just a random pattern. That represents the Korean Office Commute.
- Morning Rush (07:30 ~ 09:00): Everyone is rushing to work.
- Evening Rush (17:30 ~ 19:00): Everyone is going home.
⚠️ Important Warning: Although these charts show Line 2 and Line 4, this rule applies to almost ALL subway lines in Seoul. Whether you are on Line 1, Line 5, or Line 9, if you enter the subway during these “Red Zones,” you will likely be squeezed into the train with thousands of commuters.
⛔ The Most Important Rule for Tourists
If you are a tourist and want a comfortable trip, please avoid these rush hours at all costs.
Why? It’s not just “crowded.” It can be physically painful.
- Safety Risk: During peak hours, people push each other to get inside the train. There is a risk of falling or getting injured in the crowd.
- Skipping Trains: The trains are so packed that you physically cannot enter. You might have to let 2 or 3 trains pass and wait on the platform for 10–15 minutes just to squeeze in.
- Exhaustion: You will be squeezed like sardines. You will lose all your energy before you even arrive at your destination.
My Advice: If you are traveling for sightseeing, you don’t need to rush like a local office worker. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and start your day after 09:30 AM. You will experience a completely different, peaceful, and comfortable Seoul Subway.
Conclusion
Seoul’s subway is world-class, but its rush hour is intense. Save these heatmaps to your phone, avoid the red zones, and enjoy your trip to Hongdae and Gangnam comfortably!
