[Analysis] Hearts2Hearts: Can SM’s New Girl Group Thrive in the Post-Lee Soo-man Era?

Posted by

I am just an ordinary Korean who has lived in Korea for 30 years. Having grown up during the golden age of K-pop, I’ve built a fairly extensive database of idol knowledge as a long-time fan. Although I am not an industry professional, I would like to share my analysis of Korean celebrities from the perspective of a local Korean fan.

Today’s topic is Hearts2Hearts (H2H). They debuted in February 2025 under SM Entertainment—one of Korea’s “Big 3” agencies—with the song “The Chase.” This group occupies a very unique position. SM was founded by Lee Soo-man, and his creative direction was the core of the company’s identity. However, Hearts2Hearts is the first group to debut after his departure following an internal management dispute. Being the first “Post-Lee Soo-man” group and the first girl group since aespa, they carry a heavy burden of proof.

1. Member Analysis: The Three Pillars—Ian, Jueun, and Carmen

Hearts2Hearts is an 8-member multinational group (Jiwoo, Carmen, Yuha, Stella, Jueun, A-na, Ian, and Ye-on). While they are diverse, my analysis shows that Ian, Jueun, and Carmen are the core members driving the group’s identity.

  • Ian (The Visual & Viral Center): Ian possesses the “it-girl” visual that Koreans and Gen Z absolutely love. She became a household name through the viral “Ian March” (Ian Haengjin-gok) shorts. Even those who don’t follow idols know her face. While she may not be the most technically skilled yet, she is undeniably the most eye-catching member with her incredible stage presence and facial expressions.
  • Jueun (The Performance Anchor): At the end of the day, an idol group needs a strong performance. Jueun is arguably one of the best dancers among recent rookies. Even to an untrained eye, her power and precision stand out, making her the perfect center for their choreography.
  • Carmen (The Global Weapon): Carmen is SM’s first idol from Indonesia. This is a massive strategic advantage for capturing the Southeast Asian market. Her fancam views are overwhelmingly high, and the sheer volume of international support she brings is a powerful asset for the group’s global longevity.

2. Debut Song Analysis: “The Chase” – A Dreamy yet Sophisticated Start

The song is categorized as Synth-pop, but to the general public, it feels like a classic “Easy Listening” track. However, looking deeper into the production reveals SM’s classic “High-quality” touch.

  • Production & Concept: Written by SM’s hitmaker Kenzie and inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the song uses “Choice and Adventure” as its core keywords. It features an intense bass synth that drives the track’s mood changes, shifting between a mysterious atmosphere and an upbeat rhythm.
  • Musical Details: The song is rich with electronic layers, echoes, and 90s R&B-inspired vocal harmonies. While it avoids aggressive high notes, the “Voguing” elements in the choreography and the “Shuffle Dance” point moves give it a stylish, modern edge that appeals to Gen-Z.
  • The Verdict: The production feels “expensive” and polished. However, it lacks that explosive “hook” that shakes the entire nation. It’s a sophisticated track for enthusiasts, but it hasn’t quite reached “national syndrome” status yet.

3. Thoughts on Their Success: “The Second Girls’ Generation?”

Many SM purists argue that the group lacks the “Lee Soo-man touch”—the experimental edge seen in f(x) or aespa. However, I disagree. Girls’ Generation also started with a simple “youthful/innocent” concept rather than something experimental.

Hearts2Hearts has great chemistry and “Star Quality,” which is something you can’t teach. If they find the right song, their individual charms and variety show potential will lead them to mainstream success. Especially with Carmen leading the way in Southeast Asia, they have a clear path to profitability while they build their brand in the West.

4. Areas for Improvement

  • Vocal Stability: SM has a reputation for having the industry’s strongest vocalists. However, H2H seems to still be finding its vocal footing. While Yuha, Ye-on, and Carmen show great potential, they lack that “powerhouse” vocal presence SM is known for. They will need to show significant growth in their live performances to silence the skeptics.
  • Absence of a Mega-Hit: Their biggest hurdle is the absence of a true massive hit song. While they have a strong core fandom and record-breaking debut sales, they need a song that the general public can’t stop humming. This is a task for SM’s A&R team to solve.

Final Thoughts

As a K-pop fan, I always want to see Korean idols succeed. Hearts2Hearts has the visuals and the “star factor” to become icons. With the right music and continued support from SM, they have everything it takes to reach the top. Go Hearts2Hearts!
