If you are planning a trip to Seoul, you have probably heard of Gumdaeji Sikdang. It is a world-famous K-BBQ spot in Yaksu, known for being a favorite of BTS and EXO. But is it a true local gem or just a tourist attraction? I visited on a Saturday morning to find out.
1. The Real Experience: Waiting & Atmosphere
I arrived at 10:00 AM on a Saturday to put my name on the waiting list. After waiting for an hour at a nearby cafe with my friends, I was finally able to enter at 11:00 AM.
Even early in the morning, the crowd was a mix of 50% Koreans and 50% foreigners. It felt more like a famous tourist landmark than a “hidden” local restaurant.
2. The Menu: “Basil Wrap” & Soft Stew
The real star at Gumdaeji Sikdang is their signature Basil Wrap (Bajil-ssam).
- The Signature Basil Wrap: This is the biggest differentiator. Wrapping the juicy pork in fresh, fragrant basil leaves is a unique experience you won’t easily find at other K-BBQ shops. If you decide to eat here, you must order the Basil Wrap.
- The Pork Belly: The meat is definitely good, but to be honest, it doesn’t taste significantly different from other high-quality BBQ places in Seoul. It’s great, but maybe not “revolutionary.”
- Kimchi Jjigae (Stew): Unlike some Korean stews that have a chewy texture, the stew here is boiled for a long time. The pork is extremely soft and tender, literally melting in your mouth.
3. My Honest Verdict: A “Hot Take”
To be completely honest, considering the long wait time, the price, and the high expectations, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me.
- The Celebrity Factor: I felt that its fame is largely driven by its celebrity reputation. While the food is good, it feels more like a “must-visit” tourist spot than a place for locals.
- My Recommendation: If you are a traveler with very limited time in Korea, I would recommend trying other great BBQ spots instead of spending hours in line here.
- If You Still Want to Visit: Arrive early to put your name on the list, and definitely order the Basil Wrap! It’s the one thing that truly stands out.
