As an ordinary Korean who grew up during the “Golden Age” of K-pop, I have seen many groups rise and fall. Although I don’t work in the industry, my years of following idols have given me a unique perspective. Today, I want to share my honest thoughts on izna, a group that recently caught my attention.
1. The Birth of izna: I-LAND 2 and The Black Label
izna debuted through the survival show I-LAND 2. This project was a collaboration between CJ (WakeOne) and The Black Label. While WakeOne handles management, The Black Label leads the production. Unfortunately, the show didn’t reach the massive popularity of the Produce series. Nevertheless, for fans like me who love survival shows, it was a fascinating journey.
2. Strong Foundations: Why I Believe in izna
Despite the moderate success of their show, izna has several powerful strengths.
- Powerful Support: They have the backing of CJ, the most influential giant in the Korean entertainment industry. Recently, we can see CJ providing strong support through YouTube content and variety shows.
- Top-Tier Performance: Since they were born from a survival show, their skills are impressive. Their average height is notably tall, giving them a striking stage presence.
- Visual and Skill Balance: Their visuals are among the best for new girl groups. Moreover, their dancing is highly polished. While the vocal weight is mostly on member Choi Jungeun, the overall live performance is stable.
3. Challenges Ahead: The Missing Pieces
However, I believe izna still faces some hurdles.
“To succeed in this crowded market, a group needs more than just talent; they need a clear identity.”
- The Concept Identity Crisis: Their early tracks like IZNA and SIGN felt like a modern version of 2nd-gen K-pop mixed with The Black Label’s style. However, their later track Mamma Mia felt a bit disconnected. I believe they should lean into their “cool and sophisticated” image rather than just following the “girl crush” trend.
- The Departure of Yoon Jiyoon: Originally a 7-member group, Yoon Jiyoon left just three months after their debut. This was a significant blow. She was a popular member with a unique vocal color that complemented Jungeun perfectly. Consequently, her absence leaves a gap in both the fandom and the group’s vocal depth.
4. Fin4. Market Reality: The Golden Time for izna
Perhaps because I enjoyed the audition program so much, I have developed a deep affection for this group. Their visuals and skills are undoubtedly in the top tier. Therefore, I believe their potential for success is very high if they find the right song.
However, the current idol market is oversaturated. New groups emerge constantly, making competition fiercer than ever. In fact, the first one or two years after debut are crucial. If a group does not achieve success during this “Golden Time,” the chances of winning later are nearly zero. I truly hope izna finds their unique color soon and becomes a representative group for Korea.al Thoughts: High Potential for Success
I truly want izna to succeed. They have the visuals, the talent, and the financial backing. If they find the right “color” and a hit song that truly fits their image, they have the potential to represent Korea on the global stage.
